Known as the "Surfer Angel," a Brazilian physician, seminarian, and surfer dedicated to serving the poor and spreading faith, whose life of virtue led to his recognition as Venerable.
Guido Vidal França Schäffer (1974–2009) was a Brazilian physician, surfer, and seminarian known for his deep faith and dedication to serving the poor. Born on May 22, 1974, in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, he was inspired by his father's medical profession and his mother's involvement in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. After earning his medical degree in 1998, Guido combined his passion for surfing with a commitment to his faith, volunteering his medical services to the Missionaries of Charity and organizing care for the homeless in Rio de Janeiro.
Feeling a call to the priesthood, Guido began theological studies at the Monastery of Saint Benedict in Rio and later joined the Saint Joseph Seminary. Throughout his formation, he continued his medical outreach and lay preaching, becoming a beloved figure among his peers for his enthusiasm and dedication. Tragically, on May 1, 2009, at the age of 34, Guido drowned while surfing off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. His funeral drew a large crowd, reflecting the profound impact he had on his community.
In recognition of his virtuous life, the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro initiated Guido's beatification process in 2015, granting him the title "Servant of God." On May 20, 2023, Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues, declaring him "Venerable." Guido's legacy continues to inspire many, particularly within the surfing community, where he is affectionately known as the "Surfer Angel."
