José Gregorio Hernández

José Gregorio Hernández (1864–1919) was a Venezuelan physician known for his deep faith, medical expertise, and commitment to serving the poor. Born in Isnotú, Venezuela, he pursued medical studies in Caracas and further specialized in Europe, bringing advanced medical knowledge back to his country. A devout Catholic, he saw his profession as a way to serve God, often treating patients free of charge and assisting those in need.

Despite his aspirations to become a priest, he discerned that his true calling was to live out his faith through medicine. Hernández was widely respected for his humility, generosity, and scientific contributions, including pioneering medical research in Venezuela. His dedication to both science and faith earned him the admiration of many, and he became known as the "Doctor of the Poor."

On June 29, 1919, Hernández was tragically killed in a car accident while running an errand for a sick patient. His reputation for holiness and service led to widespread devotion, and in 2020, Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession, leading to his beatification. He remains a beloved figure in Venezuela and beyond.
