Maria Troncatti

Blessed María Troncatti (1883–1969) was an Italian Salesian missionary nurse who dedicated her life to serving the indigenous Shuar people of Ecuador. Born in Italy, she joined the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, also known as the Salesian Sisters, and trained as a nurse during World War I. Feeling called to missionary work, she was sent to Ecuador in 1922, where she worked tirelessly in the Amazon jungle, providing medical care, education, and evangelization to the local communities.

María Troncatti not only healed the sick but also played a vital role in fostering peace between indigenous groups and settlers. She helped establish schools, chapels, and social programs, always prioritizing the dignity and well-being of the people she served. With deep faith and a spirit of sacrifice, she embraced the challenges of missionary life, often traveling long distances through dangerous terrain to reach those in need. Her work was marked by a profound love for the Eucharist and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel.

On August 25, 1969, María Troncatti tragically died in a plane crash in Ecuador, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service and missionary zeal. Recognized for her holiness and dedication, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
