Rosario Livatino

Rosario Livatino was an Italian judge known for his deep faith and commitment to justice. Born in 1952 in Sicily, he studied law at the University of Palermo and became a magistrate, dedicating his career to fighting organized crime. Despite threats from the Mafia, Livatino remained steadfast in his principles, believing that his work was not just a legal duty but a moral and spiritual one. He lived a humble life, guided by his Catholic faith, and often referred to himself as the "subordinate of God," emphasizing his sense of divine mission in upholding justice.

Livatino gained prominence for his efforts in prosecuting members of the Sicilian Mafia, particularly through his work against corruption and illegal financial activities. He refused personal protection, believing that his fate rested in God's hands. His courage made him a target, and on September 21, 1990, at just 37 years old, he was ambushed and assassinated by Mafia hitmen on his way to court. His murder was a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those who stand against organized crime, but his legacy endured, inspiring many in Italy and beyond.

Recognized for his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Rosario Livatino was beatified on May 9, 2021, by Pope Francis, who praised him as a model of integrity and faith in public service.
