Slovakian nun and nurse who sacrificed her life to aid persecuted priests during the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Born in 1916 in Krivá, she joined the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross and became a nurse, dedicating herself to caring for the sick. During the oppressive communist era, she secretly helped imprisoned priests and seminarians escape, putting her own life at great risk.
In 1952, she was arrested by the secret police after attempting to help a priest flee from captivity. She endured brutal interrogations, severe torture, and a harsh prison sentence of 12 years. Her health deteriorated due to the inhumane treatment, and she was eventually released in 1955 in a critical condition. Despite her immense suffering, she remained faithful and offered her pain for others.
Zdenka died on July 31, 1955, at the age of 38, from the wounds and illness caused by her imprisonment. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003, recognized as a martyr who gave her life for the love of the Church and its persecuted clergy.
