André Bessette

Saint André Bessette (1845–1937), also known as Brother André, was a humble lay brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross and a powerful intercessor for the sick and suffering. Born Alfred Bessette on August 9, 1845, in Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Quebec, he was orphaned at the age of 12 and struggled with poor health and illiteracy throughout his life. Despite these challenges, he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1870 and was assigned as a doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal, a role he fulfilled with great humility and dedication.

Brother André became widely known for his deep devotion to Saint Joseph and his miraculous ability to heal. Thousands of people came to him for prayers and healing, and he attributed all miracles to Saint Joseph’s intercession. With the donations he received, he founded Saint Joseph’s Oratory on Mount Royal in Montreal, which remains a major pilgrimage site and testament to his faith.

Pope John Paul II beatified Brother André on May 23, 1982, and Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on October 17, 2010. His feast day is celebrated on January 6. At his canonization, Pope Benedict XVI described him as “a man of prayer, a man of service, a man entirely devoted to Saint Joseph,” highlighting his extraordinary faith and humility.
