Mexican mystic, writer, mother of nine, and founder of the "Works of the Cross," whose profound spiritual writings and devotion to Christ led to her beatification in 2019.
Concepción Cabrera de Armida (1862–1937), affectionately known as "Conchita," was a Mexican mystic, writer, and mother whose extraordinary spiritual journey unfolded amidst her role as a devoted wife and mother of nine children. Born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Conchita grew up in a deeply religious household, nurturing a profound love for God from an early age. Married to Francisco Armida in 1884, she embraced her vocation as a wife and mother wholeheartedly, balancing her responsibilities while fostering an active spiritual life. Despite the challenges of raising a large family, she found time to write prolifically, producing spiritual reflections, prayers, and mystical writings that revealed her intimate relationship with Christ.
Following her husband’s untimely death in 1901, Conchita’s spiritual life deepened further. She felt a divine calling to dedicate her life to the mission of spreading God’s love and mercy, particularly through the priesthood. Her mystical experiences, including visions and locutions, inspired her to establish the "Works of the Cross," a family of apostolic movements within the Church. Among these were the Apostolate of the Cross, the Sisters of the Cross, and the Priests of the Cross of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, aimed at fostering spiritual renewal and devotion to the Eucharist. Despite facing criticism and skepticism, Conchita’s unwavering faith and obedience to Church authorities allowed her initiatives to flourish and gain recognition.
Throughout her life, Conchita authored over 60,000 pages of spiritual writings, including her renowned "Diary," which chronicled her mystical experiences and insights into God’s love. She was deeply committed to promoting sanctity in everyday life, demonstrating that holiness was attainable for all, regardless of their state in life. Concepción Cabrera de Armida’s legacy continues to inspire countless faithful worldwide, and in 2019, she was beatified by the Catholic Church, recognized as a model of holiness for laypeople.
