"Pietro, how many things I have to learn from you. You are a clear example for me and I thank you. With God's help and blessing we are going to do everything we can to create a new family, a small cenacle where Jesus reigns over our affections, desires and actions."
Saint Gianna Beretta Molla (1922–1962) was an Italian pediatrician, wife, and mother renowned for her profound faith and dedication to family. Born on October 4, 1922, in Magenta, Italy, she was the tenth of thirteen children in a devout Catholic family. Gianna pursued a career in medicine, specializing in pediatrics, and was deeply involved in her parish community. In 1955, she married Pietro Molla, and together they had four children.
During her fourth pregnancy, Gianna was diagnosed with a fibroma in her uterus. Despite medical advice to terminate the pregnancy to treat the tumor, she chose to carry the child to term, prioritizing her unborn child's life over her own health. After giving birth to her daughter, Gianna developed septic peritonitis and died a week later on April 28, 1962.
Pope John Paul II beatified Gianna on April 24, 1994, and canonized her on May 16, 2004. Her feast day is celebrated on April 28. Pope John Paul II described her as "a mother who, with the strength of her faith, gave her life for her child."
