Polish lay missionary who dedicated her life to serving others in mission countries, tragically dying while volunteering in Bolivia.
Helena Kmieć (1991–2017) was a Polish lay missionary renowned for her dedication to serving others through faith and charity. Born in Kraków and raised in Libiąż, she pursued chemical engineering at the Silesian University of Technology, where she actively participated in academic chaplaincy and choir activities. Her commitment to missionary work led her to volunteer in countries such as Hungary, Romania, and Zambia, focusing on aiding children and youth.
In January 2017, Helena traveled to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to assist the Servant Sisters of Dębica in an orphanage. Tragically, on the night of January 24–25, she was fatally attacked during a break-in at the facility, passing away at the age of 25. Her death was widely mourned, and she was posthumously awarded the Gold Cross of Merit by the President of Poland for her charitable contributions.
In recognition of her profound faith and selfless service, the Archdiocese of Kraków initiated her beatification process in May 2024, granting her the title "Servant of God."
