Paraguayan Carmelite nun whose life of joy, sacrifice, and deep Eucharistic devotion led to her beatification in 2018.
Blessed María Guggiari Echeverría (1925–1959) was a Paraguayan nun known for her deep love of God, dedication to the poor, and commitment to her vocation. Born in Villarica, Paraguay, she was deeply involved in her parish from a young age and became a member of Catholic Action, where she worked tirelessly to evangelize and serve those in need. During this time, she developed a close friendship with a young medical student, Saua Angel, whom she encouraged in his discernment of the priesthood. Though she deeply loved him, María chose to sacrifice her personal desires and fully dedicate her life to God.
In 1955, María entered the Discalced Carmelite order, taking the religious name María Felicia of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Her life as a nun was marked by profound humility, service, and an intense love for the Eucharist. She was known for her joy, simplicity, and willingness to endure suffering for the sake of others. However, her time in religious life was short, as she was diagnosed with hepatitis and endured great pain with patience and faith.
María Felicia passed away in 1959 at the age of 34, offering her final suffering as an act of love for Christ. Her holiness and selfless love inspired many, leading to her beatification in 2018 by Pope Francis.
